Melbourne's climate swings hard and often. Those temperature changes push spirit in and out of the wood far faster than Scotland's steady cool does, which is why a Starward of just a few years develops colour and depth that would take a Scotch considerably longer.

• Starward Nova — single malt matured entirely in Australian red wine barrels: shiraz, cabernet and pinot noir. Red berries, chocolate and soft spice. The signature bottle.
• Starward Solera — single malt matured in apera barrels, Australia's sherry-style fortified wine, using a solera system where the vessel is never fully emptied. Raisin, pineapple and caramel. The richest of the range.
• Starward Two-Fold — a double grain whisky (wheat and malted barley together) rather than a single malt, aged in red wine barrels. Softer and lighter, built for mixing.

Which One Should You Buy?

• First Starward: Nova — it shows what the wine barrels do most clearly.
• If you like sherried whisky: Solera.
• For highballs and cocktails: Two-Fold.

Starward genuinely works in cocktails — the red fruit gives a whisky sour or an Old Fashioned a character no Scotch will. It's also the easiest whisky to hand a wine drinker who claims not to like whisky.

Is Starward a single malt?
Nova and Solera both are. Two-Fold is a double grain whisky — wheat and malted barley together — so it's not technically a single malt, even though it comes from the same distillery.
