Molasses, Not Grapes or Grain
Rum is distilled from sugarcane byproducts — usually molasses, sometimes fresh cane juice — which is why it comes from wherever sugarcane grows: the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Philippines, historically one of Asia's biggest sugar producers. That shared raw material is also why rum takes so well to tropical maturation — the same climate that grows the cane accelerates the barrel ageing later.
