What Separates a Lager From a Pilsner

Both are bottom-fermented and served cold, but a pilsner (Stella Artois, Singha) is brewed with noble hops for real bitterness, while most mass-market lagers (Budweiser, Heineken, Asahi, Sapporo) keep hops restrained so the beer doesn't compete with food. Neither is better — one is built for drinking on its own, the other for sitting on a table with a meal.

How to Serve It

Ice-cold, 3 to 6°C — the exact temperature depends on the style, but colder rather than warmer is the safe default in Philippine heat. Keep the rest of the pack on ice if you're outdoors.

Which Lager Should You Buy?

• For barbecue and pulutan: Budweiser or Heineken — restrained, easy-drinking, built for grilled food.
• With sushi or seafood: Sapporo or Asahi — Japanese lager is deliberately light so it doesn't fight the meal.
• With spicy food: Singha — full-bodied and hoppy enough to stand up to chilli.
• For actual bitterness: Stella Artois, a genuine pilsner rather than a mass lager.
