Asahi Super Dry came out of extensive market research showing Japanese drinkers wanted something less malty, a little stronger, and with a lighter aftertaste — a beer that suited a changing diet. Asahi built exactly that in 1987, and it worked so completely that it triggered the "Dry Wars" among Japanese brewers and a brief international fad for dry beer.
The competitors faded. Super Dry is still the world's premier dry beer, and karakuchi — the crisp, dry finish — is what it is named for.
