The Reinheitsgebot

Germany's beer purity law, dating back to 1516, originally restricted beer to just water, barley and hops — yeast was added to the definition once its role in fermentation was understood. Paulaner still brews within that tradition, which is part of why German wheat and lager styles taste as clean and grain-forward as they do.

Which One Should You Buy?

• For something aromatic and distinctly German: Weissbier — the banana-and-clove yeast character is unmistakable.
• For a straightforward, food-friendly lager: Original Münchner.

How to Serve It

Weissbier in a tall, curved glass if you have one — it's built to hold the head. Both served cold, 6 to 8°C, slightly warmer than a pilsner to let the malt and yeast character show.
