Why Irish Whiskey Tastes Smoother

Triple distillation. Scotch is distilled twice; Jameson three times. Each additional pass strips out more of the heavier compounds, which is why Irish whiskey is characteristically lighter and cleaner. No peat, no smoke, nothing to acclimatise to — it is the softest landing in whiskey.

The Range

• Jameson Original — pot still and grain whiskey blended together. Orchard fruit, vanilla and nutty sweetness. The benchmark, and the one for highballs.
• Black Barrel — matured in double-charred bourbon barrels, with a higher proportion of pot still whiskey. Richer, spicier, more vanilla. Widely considered the best Irish whiskey for an Old Fashioned.
• Caskmates Stout Edition — finished in barrels that previously held Irish craft stout, after a barrel swap with a local brewery. Cocoa, coffee and a hop edge over the classic Jameson base.

Which Jameson Should You Buy?

• Starting out, or mixing: Original. Jameson, ginger ale and lime is the distillery's own serve and it works.
• For cocktails: Black Barrel. The double-charred vanilla does most of the work in an Old Fashioned.
• If you drink craft beer: Caskmates. Try it alongside a stout — that pairing is the point of the bottle, not a gimmick.

How to Drink It

Jameson is smooth enough to drink neat without any acclimatisation, which is rare at this price. Over ice, in a highball with ginger ale, or neat in a nosing glass — all reasonable.
