Sapporo has been brewing since 1876, which makes it the oldest beer brand in Japan.
The Star on the Can
It is the Pole Star, taken from the flag of the Hokkaido Development Commission that founded the original brewery. Sapporo predates most of what people think of as Japanese beer culture.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Bright gold, clear
- Nose: Clean grain with a restrained hop note
- Palate: Crisp and refined, well balanced
- Finish: Clean, with a subtle bitter edge
Built to Drink With Food
Japanese lager is deliberately restrained — the point is that it does not compete with the meal. That makes Sapporo one of the better beers to put on a table with strongly flavoured food, where a hoppier beer would fight it.
How to Serve It
Ice-cold, 3 to 5°C. Straight from the can or into a chilled glass.
Food Pairing
Sushi, sashimi and yakitori; gyoza and ramen; grilled seafood and inihaw; tempura and fried food.
For adults of legal drinking age only. Please enjoy responsibly.
