Gato Negro

Gato Negro has been made by Viña San Pedro in Chile's Curicó Valley since 1943. The black cat is one of the most recognised wine labels in the world, and the proposition has never changed: honest Chilean wine at a price that lets you open it on a Tuesday.

Why Chilean Wine Is Such Good Value

Chile never had phylloxera — the louse that destroyed almost every European vineyard in the 1800s never crossed the Andes or the Atacama. Chilean vines still grow on their own roots. Combined with reliably dry summers and cool nights, that means consistent ripening year after year with far less intervention.

• Merlot — ripe plum with vanilla, medium-bodied, smooth tannins. The softest of the reds.
• Chardonnay — tropical fruit with peach and banana, crisp and well balanced.
• Moscato — sweet peach and apricot with balancing acidity.
• Blanco Dulce — openly sweet white; peach, tropical fruit and honey.
• Rosé Dulce — sweet pink with red berries, strawberry and florals.
• 9 Lives range — the step up, including Carmenere, Chile's signature grape.

Which One Should You Buy?

• For a weeknight: Merlot. Soft enough to drink on its own.
• For seafood: Chardonnay.
• For a party or dessert: Moscato, Blanco Dulce or Rosé Dulce — all sweet, all low in alcohol.
• For something unfamiliar: Carmenere — thought extinct in France, rediscovered in Chile in 1994 after a century mistaken for Merlot.

Reds at 16 to 18°C — twenty minutes in the ref. Whites at 8 to 10°C, sweet whites and rosé colder still at 6 to 8°C.
