The Singleton of Dufftown

The Singleton of Dufftown is Diageo's single malt from one of Speyside's working distilleries — not a famous name, and priced accordingly, which makes it some of the better value in age-stated Scotch.

What Makes It Different

A high proportion of European oak in the maturation. Most Speyside malts lead with light orchard fruit; the European oak here pushes The Singleton toward nutty, malty depth instead. It is a fuller, rounder style than the region's reputation suggests.

The Range

• 12 Year Old — toasted nuts, malt and dried fruit, with a smooth dry finish. Straightforward, and that is not a criticism: there is nothing to work out.
• 15 Year Old — European and American oak. The American oak adds vanilla sweetness and spice, making this noticeably sweeter and more layered than the 12 rather than simply older. Originally a Travel Retail release.

Which One Should You Buy?

The 12 if you are starting with single malt or want an everyday bottle that does not need an occasion. The 15 if you already like the 12 — it is more of the same character with more depth, rather than a different whisky.

How to Drink It

Neat, or over a single large cube. The Singleton is one of the more forgiving malts — it will not fall apart with ice, and it works in a highball with soda, which matters in Philippine weather.

Roasted nuts and chicharon, aged cheddar, dark chocolate, grilled pork.
