Tanduay has been distilling in the Philippines since 1854 and is one of the most awarded rum producers in the world by volume of medals. This is the expression that best makes the case: ten years minimum in ex-bourbon oak barrels, in tropical conditions.
Tropical ageing is the thing to understand here. Heat accelerates maturation dramatically, so ten years in the Philippines does considerably more to a spirit than ten years in Scotland or Kentucky would. This drinks older than its age statement.
