Where it sits: the step up from the 12, and the most technically interesting bottle in the range.
The Glenlivet was one of the first distilleries to use French oak in whisky making, and this expression is the reason. A proportion of the spirit — not all of it — is matured in French Limousin oak casks for a limited period, deliberately restrained so the oak does not overpower the malt.
Limousin oak is cut in the Dordogne and normally used for fine wine and cognac. Its low density lets spirit penetrate deeper into the wood, which is where the distinctive spiciness comes from, and it gives a richer, creamier finish than American oak alone.
Many distilleries have since imitated the technique. This is the original.

How It Differs From the 12
Three extra years, and the French oak. The 12 is fruit-forward and smooth; the 15 is spicier, creamier and fuller-bodied. If you like the 12 and want more character rather than simply more age, this is the correct next bottle.
How to Serve
Neat, in a nosing glass. A few drops of water will bring the spice forward. No ice — the French oak character is the point and cold suppresses it.
