Sutter Home has been run by the Trinchero family in California since 1948. The Merlot is the soft one — blackberry, plum and rich cherry with hints of smoke and spice, and tannins gentle enough that it never gets in the way of the food.
It took a Double Gold at the 2019 San Francisco International, which for a wine at this price is not a small thing.
