Kakubin — The Square Bottle, and Japan's Highball
Kakubin was created in 1937 by Shinjiro Torii, Suntory's founder and first Master Blender. It was launched simply as "Suntory Whisky", but drinkers renamed it themselves: kakubin means "square bottle", after the tortoiseshell-cut design that has barely changed in nearly ninety years.
What matters more is what it is for. The Kakubin highball — whisky, ice, soda, in that order — is the default order in Japanese izakayas, and this whisky was built for it: sweet aroma, rich flavour, dry finish.

How to Make a Kakubin Highball
Fill a tall glass to the top with ice. Add one part whisky, stir to chill. Add three parts cold soda, pouring down the side. Stir once, vertically, and no more — over-stirring kills the carbonation. Lemon peel optional.
Done properly this is one of the best long drinks there is, and it suits Philippine heat better than almost any other whisky serve.
