Description
The Solera Vat — A Cask That Has Never Been Emptied
Where it sits: the step up from the 12, and the expression that best explains what makes Glenfiddich unusual.
Most whisky is married in casks that get filled and emptied. The Solera Vat is different: it is a large oak tun that has never been less than half full since 1998. New whisky goes in, mature whisky comes out, and what remains carries a trace of every batch that has passed through.
The technique is borrowed from sherry production, and it is why this tastes richer and more layered than fifteen years alone would explain.
Product Highlights
- Speyside single malt Scotch whisky, aged 15 years
- Married in the Solera Vat, continuously part-full since 1998
- 40% ABV, 700ml bottle
- Solera vatting borrowed from sherry production
- One of Glenfiddich's best-selling expressions worldwide
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Complex — vanilla, dark fruit and honey
- Palate: Sherry oak, marzipan and ginger, with a smooth texture
- Finish: Long and sweet
How to Serve
Neat, in a nosing glass. A few drops of water will lift the honey and dark fruit. This one does not want ice — cold flattens exactly the layered sweetness you are paying for.
