Gran Reserva is the top of Rioja's ageing ladder, and a producer cannot make one every year. It requires at least five years' ageing, of which two must be in barrel, before the wine is allowed out.
That means the 2016 in the bottle has already had the waiting done for you. Extended time in French and American oak, then years more in bottle, produce the tertiary character — leather, tobacco, dried fruit — that separates aged Rioja from everything else.
