Description
French Triple Sec — The One Cocktails Are Written For
Started by two brothers in Angers in 1875, Cointreau is now sold in over 200 countries and is the orange liqueur most classic cocktail recipes assume you are using.
It is made from a blend of bitter and sweet orange peels, distilled with neutral spirit. The exact formulation is a family secret, and the ratio is adjusted by flavour profile rather than fixed.
Why It Costs More Than Standard Triple Sec
Two reasons. It uses distilled orange peel rather than orange flavouring, and at 40% ABV it is roughly twice the strength of most triple secs. In a margarita that matters — a weaker triple sec dilutes the drink and pushes it sweet.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Bright bitter orange peel, clean and aromatic
- Palate: Balanced sweet and bitter orange, crisp rather than syrupy
- Finish: Clean and dry, with lingering zest
What It Is For
Margarita — two parts tequila, one part Cointreau, one part fresh lime. Shake, strain over fresh ice, salt the rim.
Cosmopolitan — vodka, Cointreau, cranberry, lime.
Sidecar — cognac, Cointreau, lemon.
White Lady — gin, Cointreau, lemon.
It is also good enough to drink neat over ice, or with soda and an orange slice as a light aperitif.
