Description

Mezcal is not tequila with smoke added. It is a different spirit, made in Oaxaca rather than Jalisco, from espadín agave rather than Blue Weber, and roasted in earth-lined pits over hot rocks before fermentation. The smoke comes from that roasting — it is a production method, not a flavouring.

"Joven" means unaged, so nothing sits between you and that pit-roasted character.

Start here if: you drink peated whisky. This is the closest thing agave has to Islay.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Wood smoke, damp earth, cooked fruit
  • Palate: Thick and rich, sweet roasted agave under the smoke
  • Finish: Long, smoky, surprisingly clean

How to Serve

Neat at room temperature, in small measures. It also makes a remarkable Negroni variation and a smoky margarita that will divide the room — some people will love it and some will not finish it.

Questions

How smoky is it?
Assertively. If you have tried mezcal in a cocktail and found it subtle, drinking this neat will be a different experience.

Is mezcal just smoky tequila?
No. Different region, different agave, different production. All tequila is technically a type of mezcal, but not the reverse — and the two taste nothing alike.
